It took me a long time to find what worked for me in the mornings. I am not a total morning person, but I am also not NOT a morning person, ya know what I mean? When I was in my 20’s I never left myself enough time in the morning and always felt rushed. I hated the anxiety I caused for myself by doing that. My thirties have brought clarity. So I now know that I need a minimum of one hour to get ready in the morning. One hour and 45 minutes is ideal. During the summer this time seems easier to come by, so this is my typical summer morning routine:
1. Wake up BEFORE anyone else.
I know that if my daughter gets up before me then I will feel behind all day, so this mama gets up first. I resist the urge to lay in bed and check all the social medias, instead I grab my water and head to the guest room. I keep my Bible and my yoga mat in there. Ideally I would love to have 45 minutes all to myself for reading, meditation, and stretching. I don’t always get that, sometimes it is as little as 15 minutes, but I am a calmer, happier wife and mom when I get this time in the morning.
2. Make a quick smoothie.
After being awake for 30-45 minutes I usually like to get a little something on my stomach. If I wait much longer my blood sugar drops and I feel so gross. To prevent that i like to make a little smoothie using my hand blender to lessen clean-up. I love a good mango banana smoothie with almond milk. It’s just enough to get my through until breakfast.
3. Get ready and have breakfast.
Usually, at this point I wake my daughter up (sometimes the noise of the hand blender does that for me) and then we get ready for our day. We love making breakfast together. Soft boiled eggs, bacon, and fruit is our most common breakfast. Sometimes we go wild and add cheese or a grain-free pastry! Haha, “wild” takes on a new meaning when you’re a mom, am I right? My 6 year old LOVES to make breakfast “fancy.” She thinks that straws in our plastic cups really classes up the joint. I am totally with her on this, I feel fancier when I use a purple-striped straw. (This is the place she set for me this morning. How cute is that?)
4. Take My Vitamins
I take my vitamins and coffee into my office, with ANOTHER glass of water. As you guys know, vitamins are a huge part of my daily life. Even if I can’t take anything else, I take my New Chapter Every Woman’s One Daily Multivitamin and I have for YEARS. I believe in this product because New Chapter is committed to providing safe, effective, and high quality products made with Earth’s pure ingredients with superfoods, including Ginger, organic Turmeric, Chamomile and complimentary Elderberry. The formula is great for active women (hello moms!) My hippie heart loves that it is Non-GMO Project Verified, made with certified organic vegetables and herbs, and is gluten free. During the summer, when my daughter is home, I usually work for a few hours and then we are off to camp to play in the lake or the pool. This is my typical summer morning routine, but we all know that summer is a time to allow ourselves the grace to shirk our routine. If friends are in town we might go to breakfast, or if we had a lite night we might sleep in late. When I start my day by taking care of myself well I feel better all day. How do you take care of yourself in the morning?
