If you guys have been following me on Facebook and Instagram, you know that our family has been hit hard with some medical issues recently. Our sweet 5 year old little girl was in the hospital for some vision and potential brain issues. The doctors ruled out many of the big scary issues via a brain MRI, but they are still unsure of what the cause of her vision issues might be. We have seen many doctors and specialists and have yet to figure it out. As any momma can tell you, having your baby be ill takes a serious tole. Motherhood is hard on the heart. Our babies walk around this world and anything could happen to them. And things will happen. And when it does it breaks a mother’s heart. I have been on my knees with the Lord about my daughter’s health. I do not take my responsibility as a mother lightly, this is the most important job I will ever have. The most precious, the most rewarding, and the most exhausting.
After all the doctors and blood tests (read: holding a very strong-willed child against said strong-will in order to keep her still enough for the phlebotomists to get that vile of blood they need), phone calls with insurance and scheduling nurses, mama is beat. I needed some dedicated “me time” in order to rerejuvenate. It is summer after all and I want to relax a bit before school starts in the fall, so I scheduled a mani/pedi. I love gel nails but don’t get them all the time because they are a real treat (read: expensive), but I figured now is the time for a real treat after the emotional wringer we had been through. Since we live at camp during summer, I had to drive down to town. I got there half an hour early, so I swung into Target and picked up some iced coffee and two of my favorite fashion magazines: InStyle®, PEOPLE® StyleWatch. Public Service Announcement: both have a 20% off coupon on the Target Cartwheel App Digital Offer (available until 7/10/15 while supplies last).
I know what you might be thinking, “April, why fashion mags? You’re not a fashion blogger.” You would be right, faithful reader, I am not in fact a fashion blogger. To be honest, I have never considered myself very fashionable but fashion mags are my spa day treats. They make me feel connected to a world of beauty and artistic, functional design. And I believe Creativity breeds Creativity, so fashion mags are a great place for me to be inspired for a new home decor, wreath, or craft project. FYI I also believe coffee and good health help with that too so I made sure to bring the iced coffee and Purification along. I always put purification oil in my pedicure water… ya just never know who used that tub before you. (If you want to learn more about oils, click here.)
My few hours of R+R were just what I needed before going back up the mountain to camp to minister to my college-aged leaders and the highschoolers who are there. And not only did I get to enjoy the magazines, but my college students loved getting to read them too when I was done! Blessings on blessings.
And the nails turned out soooo cute. I love French Manicures, don’t you?
But in all reality, mamas:
let’s talk about our children’s health and our own self care? How do you all manage?
For those of you with kids that have severe illnesses, how do you manage and make sure to take care of yourself?
I need tips and encouragement from women who have been there.
