Thank you to Best Buy for providing a Misfit Shine for me to try.
I like to think of myself as healthy. I eat right – make most of my meals at home, no sugar, no grains, no gluten, no dairy. In 2013 I have focused on “clean eating” but what I have not focused on is my activity or exercise. I am a mom so I do a bit of running around at the park, but as a blogger I live a pretty sedimentary existence. FYI – blogger booty is not as sexy as it might sound. Then, last month’s issue of Real Simple Magazine asked – Which Works Better: Diet or Exercise? It was clear from the article that for long term health, exercise is essential. So I started looking for small ways to increase my activity – enter the Misfit Shine wearable activity tracker.
This lil guy logs your activities (swimming, biking, tennis, etc) steps, calories, and even your sleep to help you stay on your game. It’s battery can last up to 4 months, and it’s water resistant. It can be worn as a watch – leather or sport band (shown above), a necklace, or a brooch (with included magnet clip – shown below).
Best Buy has exclusive colors – Silver, Black, Champagne and Topaz. And the best part – it’s tiny so it doesn’t feel intrusive like some monitors that scream “I am sooooooo workin on my fitness.” I have worn mine to Disneyland, my daughter’s school functions, and around town and no one has ever commented on it – and I have some friends who will comment on everything, so I think the Misfit is pretty unobtrusive. Which I totally see as a plus.
It comes in this cool looking packaging:
Just FYI – I guess Misfit did not want any piece or part to shift in transport so they secured everything really well. So when you think you are about to destroy the package with your Hulk strength to get it open… you are ALMOST there, just give it a little more and that sucker will pop open. The tracker is that little silver disc in the middle, which again, you have to force out of the packaging (see #1 on the diagram below). I was very concerned that I was going to damage my little Shine before I ever had a chance to try it out. Again, do not be alarmed, this is normal.
All of the accessories are hidden behind a secret panel in the CD holder shaped packaging. I like the packaging design, even if it is a little difficult to get to the product. Once I stopped feeling like a pansy for not being able to get it all opened easily I was actually quite impressed with the sleek design.
You sync the Misfit Shine with your Android or iPhone – totally simple. Then you choose your “target”, mine is 600 and then the shine tells you how long you will have to do an activity to meet your goal.
The Misfit records your activity in real time. All you do it double tap the device to see how far along you are. The face has lights that correspond to the hours on a clock (so there are 12 lights) and your activity completed is indicated by those lights. So, 6 lights = 1/2 way done. 12 lights= all done. And once you are done the lights do a little Electrical Parade Show and make you feel all rewarded and warm inside… or that warmth could be your core temp being raised due to all the activity, but either way, it’s great.
Once you are done with your goal you just open the app and tap the shine on your phone. You get to see your stats for the day, including your calories burned:
All in all I am pretty impressed. I think the iPhone app is my favorite part.
It’s super sleek looking, even the Husband would wear it because it looks so cool.
Would you wear it?
