In one week I leave for the Feed The Soul Retreat. Guys, this is a dream come true. Literally, back in October, my bloggy BFFs and I were dreaming and said “We wish we could have a retreat to get away and plan our year.” Now it is January and we are making our dream a reality! We are so excited to get to visit beautiful Napa, California – wine country, baby! And if you know me then you know I like a good red. We are being hosted by two beautiful resorts: Calistoga Spa Hot Springs and Silverado Resort and Spa. Spa is in both their names, so right there you know it’s gonna be an awesome girls’ weekend. We are actually taking an extended weekend (woot) Thursday – Monday. I booked my flights so I can drop my girl at school on Thursday and pick her up form school on Monday afternoon. Mom life. I am so grateful to Evan for letting me get away like this (love you baby!). It is so needed. I am excited to be with my blog girls, relaxing, taking time for ourselves, and masterminding our 2016s together so we can come home refreshed and energized for the year ahead. If you have ever traveled with girlfriends then you know the question of “What do I pack?” can be seriously anxiety-inducing. I personally pack carry-on only. This habit started back when I lived internationally and could not wait for my checked baggage to be cleared and sent through baggage claim in case I missed a connecting flight. (See my tips for packing carry-on only here) I have continued this practice and found it really helps me pair down to the essentials and keep from feeling burdened. So for this extended weekend in Napa I am detailing exactly what to pack for a girls’ weekend – and it can all fit in your carry one and one tote.
For this extended weekend away I am flying form Southern California to Napa. I pack everything in a black rolling suitcase. I personally have found that most are pretty similar, so I don’t have one brand I am married to, but I do require that the extended handle feel sturdy and that it have four wheels so it can roll in any direction. I also take a weekender bag on the plane as my “personal item.” (FYI – click on any item below to see more info or purchase. What I Wear
As far as clothing, I am all about being efficient and quick in the airport. I cannot stand being “that guy” who is holding up the entire line because I can’t get my laptop/shoes/whatever onto the belt in a timely fashion. So I make sure to wear flats because they let you look put together and they are quick to slip off. I also tend to wear minimal jewelry – my JORD wood watch and diamond studs make life easy, they look great and neither set off the metal detectors. I slip on my favorite jeans, a comfy v-neck tee (Target), a light weight scarf I got in Nairobi back in 2007, a CC beanie, and a leather jacket. I look put together and I am totally comfy. What I Carry-On
In My Tote
I place my tote on top of my rolling luggage to keep my arm from dying. In my tote I keep everything I need handy – like electronics, water, and my wallet. For the Feed The Soul trip I am bringing something new and fun: a gopro with a car mount. You will see why later. Also, my portable charger is a must. And now that I am super paleo (what I am calling my auto-immune required diet of NO GRAINS AT ALL) I am loving these Epic Bars. So good. In My Carry-On Rolling Luggage
I am a huge fan of a capsule wardrobe. Ines de la Fressange’s book, Parisian Chic, changed my life. (See book review and outfit ideas here.) Having a limited number of items that all work together makes packing a breeze. I am bringing two long-sleeved tops, three tanks, a pair of black pants, a pair of tights, one dress, a bathing suit, a belt, my jewelry (which I wear on the plane) a warm scarf, a second pair of flats, my favorite booties, a rain jacket (NorCal in January), a trench, a blazer (totally dresses up any outfit), and a cardi. Of course, I also include pajamas, intimates, and toiletries in my carry on (see HOW I fit all this in a carry-on here.) (*Don’t forget, the images are clickable, if you see something you like, click it to get more info.) There are a few clothing pieces that I am throwing in as a surprise, but you will have to follow #FeedTheSoulRetreat on Instagram to see what goodness. With this wardrobe I should be ready for all our activities, which include:
- A hot air balloon ride and breakfast (pants, long-sleeved tee, warm scarf, trench, beanie, and boots)
- Brunch at Auberge du Soliel (dress, tights, blazer, and boots)
- Wandering around Oxbow Public Market (jeans, tank, cardi, and flats)
- Wine Train and Castle Tour (pants, tank, trench, lightweight scarf, flats)
Am I missing anything? I still have a week to pack, so if I have a glaring omission, please for the love, tell me now so I don’t have to drive around finding a Target when I am supposed to relaxing in a hot spring. Mama only gets one of these a year (cuz I am thinkin this should be an annual thing) and I don’t wanna waste it.
